Understanding the ADOS-2 Autism Assessment
At Certus Psychiatry, we use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) as part of our comprehensive approach to evaluating Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The ADOS-2 is a structured, research-based assessment that allows us to observe and measure behaviors related to autism in a consistent, clinically reliable way.
- Standardized and Structured: Uses a consistent format to observe and score behaviors linked to autism.
- Tailored Modules: Adapted for different ages (from children to adults) and language levels to ensure accuracy and relevance.
- Direct Observation: Focuses on real-time social interaction, communication, and behavior during specific activities.
- Core Areas Assessed: Measures social reciprocity, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive or restrictive behaviors.
- Expert Administration: Only trained and certified professionals can conduct and interpret the ADOS-2.
The ADOS-2 is not a test with right or wrong answers. Instead, it is a structured, interactive assessment that feels more like guided activities or conversation than a formal test. The specific activities depend on the person’s age, language, and developmental level:
- Young children may play with toys, complete puzzles, or respond to simple prompts.
- Teens and adults may be asked to engage in conversation, tell stories, or solve problems.
Throughout the process, the clinician observes and codes responses according to established criteria.
- Accurate Diagnosis: Provides an objective, standardized measure of autism-related behaviors.
- Individualized Planning: Helps shape effective treatment strategies and support plans.
- Research-Backed: Used worldwide in both clinical practice and autism research.
At Certus Psychiatry, we want you to have your questions answered, and we work diligently to provide the tools and assessments that give you the right results.
